Premanon Report 1.1
Been staying up high in the Jura region of south eastern France. Premanon is a little ski town in a see of little ski towns littering this place. We are up on a 1200m plateau about 45k NE of Geneva. I could imagine this place totally cranks in the winter though. There is a ski area every 3k and they all link together. A Back Country skier would be in paradise! The roads are pristine and all the climbs are either long and gradual or long and steep. Not much flat ground here.
After the jet lag passed I’ve found the groove in this place. We eat at certain times as a group, all 25+ of us including staff. Each day thus far we have been tested in a lab about 14mls away. So far it’s one of three tests; CO2 re-breathing (yes, CO2 like what comes out of a car’s tail pipe), VO2 max test and a 30k Time Trail on a trainer that includes a wind gate test. So far none are super tough although I haven’t done the TT yet. We will do 6 VO tests and 8 TT’s so i’m sure we’l be well drilled soon.
Just today some of us get our first of two muscle biopsy’s. I can hear the rumblings in the hall ways right now, not good. Some folks are in serous pain. Some not so much. I get mine tomorrow. Not stoked on that…
We do this routine for another week then it’s into our Altitude rooms for 3 weeks. During this time we can’t do much more than stay in the rooms, get tested and return to the rooms. In all honestly i’m not looking forward to it. What all this looks to be adding up to is not very good on bike training time… and a ton of testing. All in the name of science right? well I guess… it’s just not what I had in mind. I’m already beginning to feel like a lab rat.
On the bright side this place is beautiful. The people in charge are very cool and the group of subjects are all pretty down to earth. We’re all similar in that we’re athletes and sort of sing the same tunes. There are allot of couches here. So far it’s been fun to trade notes with other much more educated sports minds. There is allot of data to be shared. With all my bitchin and moaning regarding the testing, i’m sure what we learn makes up for the inconvenience.
last night… we got Eurosport working! thank god!
till next time…
Russ
